Forty percent of all Filipinos live in cities. The capital city,Manila, has an estimated population of about 18 million people, nearly one-fifth of the country’s people.Urban life in the Philippines has many qualities similar to living in cities anywhere. People are packed into a fairly small area and live most often in big concrete apartment buildings. They have a variety of jobs: taxi driving, entertaining, working in offices, peanut selling, and everything in between. Most of the workers in Manila lived somewhere in the provinces before moving to the crowded city, where they could make more money.

Forty percent of Filipinos live in cities, but the rest are scattered throughout
the countryside and earn a living off the land, like these fishermen
bringing their boats back to the shore of their remote fishing village after
a day of work.

Provincial Life

Many Filipinos live in the much less crowded countryside, called probincia (provinces). People in the provinces tend to earn a living more directly from the land. They have livelihoods of fishing, farming, and forestry and have individual
homes built out of local products like wood, bamboo, and thatch (strong leaves). Most thatch comes from a plant called nipa, which is a palm tree that grows on the coasts in saltwater marshes. Nearby there often are larger towns where farmers
go to do their shopping and banking and where they can sell their products.
On the coasts of the islands, most fishermen fish from their own bangkas, long, wooden, canoe-shaped boats with bamboo stabilizers on the sides. They head out to sea at night with their outboard motors purring, shine bright lights on the water, and wait for fish to get tangled in their long fishing nets. Then, in the early dawn, they gather the nets and bring the fish back to shore, selling them at the bustling morning markets.

Most of the agricultural land in the Philippines is in the flatfertile river valleys. These areas have rich soils, which promote easy farming of vegetables and fruit trees. They also have access to irrigation from the river, which is crucial for rice growing. Most family farms have a number of different crops growing to cover many of the food needs of the family, in addition to some chickens and pigs raised for eggs and meat. Often, a farmer will
choose a couple of crops to grow in bulk as cash crops. He or she also may have some extra pigs being fattened for later sale.

When these animals mature and the crops ripen, they are taken to market to be sold. The smallest numbers of Filipinos live high in the mountains. Communities in these regions are difficult to reach and therefore are very remote from the rest of the country. People in these regions are often of tribal descent, meaning that they come from different ethnic backgrounds than people of the lowland communities. Probably because they are so isolated, mountain communities are very dependent on local farming for much of their food. These communities use terraces to create flat fields on their hillsides to plant their rice and vegetables. Like lowlanders, they also have chickens and pigs for eggs and meat. Villages tend to be located along rivers, which they use for irrigation, to clean their laundry, and to hold small fish pens for freshwater fish like tilapia.

People and Culture

The country of the Philippines is a collection of islands, each with its own people and communities. The influences of Spanish and American colonization did a lot to homogenize (make the same or similar) these different cultures. Struggles against these powers, as well as against the Marcos regime, unified the islands and brought forth the first real signs of nationalism. These influences and the long history of the Filipino people have created a diverse blend of cultures with certain common themes. In this chapter, you will learn about the people of the Philippines and their national culture, as well as the ethnic cultures that are still present. Generalizations about Filipino society as a whole will be made, and the different ethnic, economic, and religious groups that make up that society will
be described.

Philippine Society

An estimated 85 million people live in the Philippines. It is
amazing to realize that, although the country is about the size of the state of New Mexico, the Philippines has nearly 50 times New Mexico’s population! Population density is a good measure of how crowded a country is, because it is the population size divided by the amount of space that population lives in. With a population
density of about 725 per square mile (255 per square kilometer), the Philippines is one of the more crowded countries in the world. Not only does the Philippines have a large population for its size, but its population is growing very rapidly. Population growth is measured by the number of new people added to the population
each year minus the number who have left or died. The population growth rate in the Philippines is currently about 2 percent, which is also one of the higher growth rates in the world. This is over twice the United States’ growth rate (.9 percent). There are two main reasons Filipinos give for having many children. Catholic beliefs suggest that birth control is against the will of God, and most Filipinos are Catholic. Also, like people in many Asian countries, Filipinos want as many children as possible to secure their future well-being. More children means more helpers in the fields and more protection for parents in their old age.

The age structure of Filipinos is skewed toward the younger generations. More than half of the 85 million Filipinos are under the age of 20, and less than 7 percent of the population is over 65 years old. In the United States, only about a quarter of the population is under 20 years old, and 12 percent is over 65. Because overpopulation is becoming a concern in the Philippines, age structure of the current population is very important. Even if effective family planning programs are implemented, there will be a long lag time until the population levels off as this huge younger generation matures. It is a good thing that Filipinos seem so tolerant
of crowded conditions, because they are likely to be even more crowded in the future.

Pizza and Pasta in Manila

CHAMPion Pizza & Pasta!

Just when you’ve thought you’ve seen and ate at every Italian resto in the metro, out comes a new establishment that lures you into its mozzarella-smelling lair.

CHAMP Pizza Pasta

Along Kamias Road, a comfy little nook called CHAMP Pizza Pasta is surprising guests with its delectable Italian fare with a dash of Filipino flavor. Located at the ground floor of CHAMP School and CHAMP International Hostel, this new pizza & pasta haven is a school-operated restaurant. CHAMP stands for Center for Hospitality Arts Management Philippines, a name that will make you realize these guys regard the food and hospitality industries serious business.

I think setting up a school, a hotel and a restaurant under one name and roof is a brilliant idea. It proves that the students do not only stock knowledge from books but also get to experience first-hand how it is to apply their common sense and judgment. It’s a great combination of theory and application.

With dishes that do not scrimp on flavor and gourmet ingredients, it’s not surprising that CHAMP Pizza Pasta has gained a cult following. They serve homemade pizza that is prepared and cooked upon ordering, so you are assured of freshness. This means shushing your growling tummy for a good 10-15 minutes as you wait. Nevertheless, the free WiFi access and the 24′ wide screen Plasma television in the resto serve as effective distractions. I think with its free Internet access, CHAMP Pizza Pasta makes itself a very apt place for students and professionals to hang out or catch up on deadlines while enjoying a muy delicioso meal. No wonder, CHAMP Pizza Pasta is gaining raves from the Q.C. foodies.

CHAMP Pizza Pasta’s scrumptious dishes were made by Chef Billy Cabal, European and Western cuisine connoisseur from the Center of Culinary Arts – Manila. Sometimes, the chefs will personally serve your order when the kitchen’s not on red alert status. Other must-try specialties include the pasta (Seafood Alfredo, specifically) and rice bowls (specifically the classic adobo flavor). Savor the rich ingredients bursting with flavor as you devour dish after dish of yummy Italian goodness.

Aside from dining and studying at CHAMP, you can also make it your home away from home! CHAMP International Hostel offers affordable accommodations that cater to both locals and tourists. Staying true to its name, CHAMP does make your bed and dining experience excelente!

Avril Lavigne in Manila

Catch Avril Lavigne Live!

On September 3, 2008, it’s Avril Lavigne’s turn to perform another concert in Araneta Coliseum, at 8:00 PM. The City of Pasig, however, is giving the City of Makati a run for its money.

The City of Pasig is one of the fast-rising commercial and industrial cities of the metropolis. The city is host to major corporations, housed in the skyscrapers sprouting all over Ortigas.

This is no wonder as the City of Pasig has always been considered the country’s cradle of civilization. The ride costs only 25 pesos, with discounts given to senior citizens. One such destination that is easily accessible from Metro Manila is the stretch of Aguinaldo Highway near the boundary of Batangas and Cavite known among old-timers away from the metropolis, one is transported to a place that offers most any dish that you may crave for. Aside from the first class amenities that golfers would expect from an exclusive facility, Splendido offers a choice of two restaurants — La Esquina Spanish Restaurant and the Ladera Golfers Lounge — both with specially created menus by Consultant Chefs Ed Quimson and Heny Sison.

La Esquina Spanish Restaurant

La Esquina is Spanish for “the corner”. The restaurant took its name from its strategic location in one corner of the golf clubhouse that provides patrons with a scenic view of the 9th green that stretches in the distance.

The restaurant comfortably seats 60 diners at a time in air-conditioned comfort, with an unparalleled view of the outlying golf course through panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The restaurant’s menu is an enticing selection of traditional Spanish dishes. For appetizers, La Esquina recommends the Tigres, fresh mussels stuffed with sauteed Spanish chorizo, aligue and shrimps topped with cheese and baked with a dash of paprika to give it that distinctive Spanish flavor; the Batido de Sardinas or whipped cream and sardines blended into a pate and creatively served on an upturned globlet with melba toast; and the Alchachofas Infanta Leonor — heart of artichokes sauteed in butter with garlic and Spanish chorizo.

No self-respecting Spanish restaurant will be without its paella, and La Esquina boasts of three: the Paella a la Christina named after JAKA Chairperson Madame Cristina Ponce Enrile, the spicy Paella Negra made with squid and squid ink, nd the Paella de Mariscos or seafood paella. The paellas at La Esquina follows the traditional recipes from Valencia that requires the paella to be cooked slowly over low heat to produce a glutinous rice dish. The perfect accompaniment to any paella dish would be the Pollo Iberico, whole chicken, roasted with caramelized garlic and potatoes.

Ladera Golfer’s Lounge

The Ladera Golfer’s Lounge has a relaxed atmosphere suites for golfers winding down after a round of play. Even here, the Spanish-Mediterranean character of the clubhouse is apparent with its high wooden ceilings and wrought iron chandeliers. Ladera, which is “hillside” in Spanish, is lcoated atop a small hill, hence its name.

The door panels surrounding Ladera are left opened in good weather to allow the cool Tagaytay breeze to waft through the dining area. Patrons can take a stroll outside the restaurant to the adjoining veranda for dessert and coffee al fresco. The restaurant seats 120 persons inside its main dining area, and up to 150 persons including the veranda area.

The menu offerings at Ladera is internation in scope — Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, or a fusion between east and west, modern and traditional. One may partake of Tagaytay’s signature dish Bulalo, which is a pot of braised bone-in beef shanks served with vegetables, or some fusion dish such as Peking Duck Mami, Chorizo Carbonara or Philly Steak Pizza.

Desserts at Splendido Taal

Among the desserts created for Splendido, one favorite is the Tropical Splendido, which is essentially meringue generously filled with pastry cream and topped with a delicious combination of tropical fruits and native suman, macerated in calamansi juice and brown sugar. Chocoholics will love the Decadent Chocolate and the Chocolate Pizza. Citrus lovers will appreciate the subtle flavors of the Tarta de Limon and Biscocho de Naranja.

Le Esquina Spanish Restaurant is open from 10:30AM to 9:00PM, an the Ladera Golfer’s Lounge from 6:00AM to 9:00PM.

For reservations, call Splendido Taal at 0918-967-0800.

La Esquina Spanish Restaurant, Laderas Golfer's Lounge, Splendido Taal, Splendido

See whats under the Sea

Scuba Diving in the Philippines

To some people, sports bring to mind tiring yourself beyond exhaustion. There are sports that not only stimulate physically, but actually require more mental and analytical work than actual physical exertion.

One such sport and wonderful recreational activity that’s both exhilarating and relaxing is scuba diving. And it’s open to everyone. Scuba is an equal opportunity sort available to men, women, and children who are in average good physical condition. Furthermore, while the underwater sights alone are enough of a reason to indulge in the sport, scuba divers can do much more than just check out the fish. Depending on an individual diver’s interest they can specialize in a skill or even choose to make diving a career opportunity.

For those just looking for a great recreational activity though, one that’s both invigorating and relaxing at the same time, scuba diving is a perfect choice. Garcia St. Makati. I was with a fellow writer and we were surveying the room. Hmm…mostly middle-aged folks and barely did we see people our age (twentysomethings). I guess Ricco Renzo really catered to the older crowd. Halfway through dessert, a group of people came up in front of the whole restaurant to sing. They were called Makati Vocalese Group and they were people our age. They sang Christmas carols amazingly, I had goosebumps all over especially with their rendition of “Carol of the Bells” (Merry merry merry merry Christmas!) Then afterwards, a man about 60 years old stood up and proceeded to replace the choir. He sang in the most languid way I’ve ever seen a tenor sing. And I was actually enjoying listening to him! I looked at my friend and she seemed to be listening intently at the cute grandpa with the golden vocal chords. So, I figured, people my age can enjoy “old” music too. And just when

I was leaving the restaurant, I heard an old man say, “The music today is all about bling-blings!” I had to stifle a laugh. True enough, the music of yesteryears is slowly fading into oblivion. Sadly, not a lot of people in my age bracket have heard of good choirs, tenors or sopranos. So, when I saw that Subic Park Hotel will have a classical music serenade, I grabbed the chance to post it here. Here are the details of the event. The Subic Park Hotel is one of the best hotels in Subic so do visit the website too to make any room reservations.

Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel

Rediscover Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel

Nowadays, people are always in a never-ending rush that they fail to appreciate how the sun rises and how it sets. I waited for so long to witness how this miracle happens. I actually have a few times, but I didn’t know what I was missing until one afternoon while standing on the pier in the midst of the sea at the Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel.

The moment is tranquil, the sea calm, the sky a beautiful combination of violet and orange. Few people were at the shore and even fewer were in the water. I stared at the horizon, not wanting to blink and miss a second of that rare opportunity. Living and working in the city, watching the sunset was like rediscovering the amazing creation of God, reviewing all His wonders, and experiencing His power in a very big way. Then I realized that sometimes you have to rediscover things in life to know their worth.

Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel is the newly renovated famous Matabungkay Beach in the ’80s. Back then, it was the only resort located at the heart of Lian, Batangas. Now if you can pay this place a visit this summer, you’ll never go wrong. Aside from the award-winning beach resort, Matabungkay also takes pride in their accommodations, facilities, and other services.

Boasting of 57 combinations of superior executive rooms, 12 suites, and 16 villas, all are fully air-conditioned with private baths and verandas. For corporate events, weddings, and special functions, this place can hold up to 500 persons at any given time. As for the food, they serve Filipino as well as international cuisine at Cafe Caballero. But if you’re craving for fresh char-grilled seafood and sumptuous salads, you can head directly to Camachile Bar and Grill. For a taste of local as well as international concoctions, Cogon Bar is the place to go.

To complete your summer getaway at Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel, visit The Wave music lounge and experience live entertainment every weekend. For sports buffs, scuba diving, kayaking, rafting, fishing, and snorkeling facilities are all available, but if you’re looking for more adventure, special trekking and boat trips can be set up to your liking, too. Team-building activities also have its place here — they offer ropes courses at the Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE).

Aside from the beautiful beach, Matabungkay also has swimming pools for children and adults. Other amenities include a basketball court, billiard tables, lawn and table tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, an indoor kiddie corner and a giant chessboard. At the end of a tiring but happy day, rejuvenate your spirits with a soothing massage at the Floating Spa and feel beautiful at the Aqua Salon. Most importantly, you can feel secure and looked after with a 24-hour security and a medical clinic. Transportation services are also workable.

But then more, more than the modern amenities made available at this resort, the magic of Matabungkay lies in the warmth of the people, its white sand beaches, and marvelous sunsets.

There are more beaches to explore in Batangas, in the Philippines, and all over the world. Too lazy to check them out one by one? Check out this free tool that allows you to search multiple hotel reservation websites.

Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel Location Address:
Brgy. By this, we mean Hamilo Coast in Nasugbu, Batangas, an eco-tourism project of SM Investments Corporation envisioned to become the premier coastal residential and resort town in the area. Composed of 13 natural coves each with its distinct character, limestone cliffs that reach for the sky, virgin forests set against a backdrop of gently sloping mountains, Hamilo Coast is set to grow into a vibrant community where life is all about having the serenity of truly being one with nature.

Come to Boracay Island!

Visit Boracay Island with your family

Boracay has long been the favorite vacation of the country’s younger generations. And no wonder! On one side of the island, you can shop till you drop, party like there’s no tomorrow and feast on food from all over the world.

What is probably less known about the island is that it’s also ideal for family vacations. Hotel — deluxe or otherwise — provide serene spots perfect for relaxation with the spouse with kids. Less “busy” than the hotspots, the area where the deluxe hotels are situated is especially suited for families. If you relish just hearing the sound of the waves along the beach, this is the place for you. Since the entire expanse of Boracay is always within the walking distance, you can always visit other areas when you need a change of scenery.

There are two ways to plan a trip with the family. You can either book through your local travel agency, which for a service fee, will prepare everything — from plane tickets, and resort reservations to itinerary. Make sure you get a good deal. The list of resort packages vary per agency, so it’s always good to compare first before committing to the first “bargain.”

If you want to do it yourself, search the web, check out newspapers, magazine for resort ads and contact them directly. They usually offer seasonal packages that help you maximize your funds. This allows you more choices and information.

There are two major gateways to Boracay island — via Kalibo airport, which requires another one-hour van ride to the jetty port, or through Caticlan airport, just five minutes away from the banca station. From there, a 20-minute scenic boat ride will take you to the island proper.

Boracay has a wide range of activities for everyone — from simply lounging about to challenging your sense of adventure. Yearly activities — like the Aklan Fiber Festival and the Nestea Beach Volleyball Championships — keep the island bustling with movement. Tourism is the island’s main source of revenue and residents make sure you feel welcome and safe. At the airport, you are given a card with vital numbers you might need such as the Coast Guard’s and Police Assistance.

Right smack in the middle of Boracay island is the tourist center, perfect for business people who need to check up on the office or email an important memo. It offers a wide range of services — foreign exchange, postal services, credit card services, business center, photo developing, internet access, long-distance telephones, safety deposit boxes, and even a mini-mart for the grocer in you. There are also tourist information center in the island for those who require more facts about Boracay.

While the kids frolic in the sun, spend some time with your partner. Stroll barefoot along the white-sand shoreline of Boracay, get a massage together on the beach, or enjoy a candlelit dinner by the sea. Nothing beats the majesty of a Boracay sunset on a lazy afternoon.

Choose from cozy bungalow-type accommodations, Mediterranean style villas or resort hotel rooms. There are always apartments and properties for sale if you decide to make this your vacation home.

Aside from the kiosks, stalls, and peddlers scattered along the beach, Boracay has two main shopping areas — the Trade Fair Center and D’Mall — both which more or less carry the same variety of goods. For the best bargain, compare prices and haggle. D’Mall has stores that sell eclectic lamps and home decor from all over the Asia. Be sure to check out the export quality items available at retail prices like organic soaps and native bags. There is also an antique shop, an art gallery, and a salon.

Since you can purchase practically everything — from shades to swimsuits — on the island of Boracay, pack light. Souvenir shirts go for as low as P75 and beaded jewelry start at P10.

If shopping isn’t your cup of tea, try the island food. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed. The choices are endless and you are bound to leave the Boracay island planning the next trip back.

There are always live solo and group acts at night when Boracay becomes an island of exotic buffets. Some establishments offer family meals at good prices — P350 for two to three persons P500 for four to six, and P750 for six to eight. There is Mongolian buffet for P175 to P195, as well as authentic Italian made-from-scratch pizza starting at P120.

A typical course meal with cocktails is only P250 while a great English breakfast with all the eggs you can eat is just under P200. Exotic cuisine can be had at steeper prices. Try Indian cuisine at Vinju and True Food, Portuguese meals at Banza, and yummy Crepes Bretonnes at Cafe Breizh.

Pasig City Hotels

Pasig City: Reclaiming its Glory from Makati City

For many years, Makati City has been the undisputed financial, commercial and business center of Metro Manila.

Even before Spain’s conquest of Manila, trading ships have been docking in the mouth of the Pasig River, spurring the settlement of merchants and ship owners even before the construction of the present-day Port of Manila.

Pasig City’s renaissance was boosted by the construction of the Asian Development Bank 10 years ago. The city has since boomed, with multinational corporations and major lending and financial institutions establishing their headquarters here. Some of these businesses include the RFM Corporation, Honda Cars Incorporated, LG Collins, Nestlé Philippines, San Miguel Corporation, MERALCO, Pure Foods Corporation and Jollibee Foods Corporation.

Today, the City of Pasig is rightly reclaiming its former status as the center of trade and commerce of Metro Manila, offering a balanced mix of shopping, business and recreational experiences to its visitors.

A Ferry through the Pasig River: An Alternative Way to Travel. If you want to be spared the daily congestion of vehicles that ply the major routes in the metropolis, a ferry through Pasig River may be the more pleasurable and comfortable alternative.

The scenic ferry ride along the historic Pasig River, the Philippines’ first nautical highway, takes an enjoyable 50 minutes from the Escolta station to the Guadalupe terminal. The ride costs only 25 pesos, with discounts given to senior citizens. The ferry transports its passengers through to six stations: Guadalupe, Hulo, Lambingan, Santa Ana, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and Escolta.

There are four air-conditioned ferries plying the River, with a seating capacity of 150 persons. The vessels load and unload passengers every thirty minutes, giving the more adventurous city dweller/visitor a front-view, center-seat chance to witness the on-going rehabilitation of the Pasig River. For the safety, comfort and security of its passengers, the Pasig River Ferry has other modern amenities like waiting areas, a ticketing system, scanners and metal detectors, comfort rooms, vending machines and elevators for persons with disabilities.

The City of Pasig: Home to the Philippine Stock Exchange. Now one of the more prestigious and significant landmarks in Ortigas, the Tektite Towers are sleek twin towers with 33 levels to their name. Rivaling Ayala’s Triangle, considered to be the centerpiece of Makati’s Central Business District [CBD], the Tektite Towers are the largest of all Philippine office complexes. Developed by Philrealty, the Tektite Towers have been home to the Philippine Stock Exchange since 1993. To date, 310 companies are listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange with a blue-chip sector, including giants such as San Miguel Corporation, FG Financial Co. Inc., and SkyCable to name a few. The Phisix Index is Manila’s counterpart to the Dow Jones Index of New York; both stock exchanges allow visitors to watch the proceedings on the trading floor from a public gallery. The Philippine Stock Exchange is located along Exchange Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. For more information on the Philippine Stock Exchange, please visit its web site at www.pse.com.ph.

A Quiet and Engaging Moment at Ortigas Park, Pasig City. The City of Pasig has become a haven for coffee lovers, with popular cafes and coffee shops in Ortigas including Starbucks and the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. The latter has one of its 14th Philippine outlets located in the heart of the Ortigas Park in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

Envisioned as an oasis in the midst of the urban jungle that is Pasig City, the Ortigas Park affords its visitors a quiet and engaging moment of tranquility. The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, nestled in its midst, reinforces this restive atmosphere by serving fresh coffee, cold drinks and food.

Ortigas Park, in its former incarnation, was an empty lot of gravel and grass, used as a passageway from Emerald Avenue to EDSA. Now, it is a landscaped park that provides solitude and rest to the denizens of Ortigas Center.

Medical City: the Philippines’ Premier Medical Tourism Destination. The Philippines is home to some of the best hospitals and stand-alone specialty clinics in the world, offering world-class expertise, state-of-the-art facilities and the distinct warmth of Filipino hospitality. One of these modern medical centers is The Medical City, located on Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City.

Sitting on a 1.5-hectare property along Ortigas Avenue, the Medical City is a self-contained healthcare complex. It has facilities for common procedures such as cosmetic and plastic surgery, dermatology, weight loss surgery, ophthalmology and dentistry as well as regular medical care. The complex has some 100,000 square meters of floor space and is composed of two towers joined by a podium and bridge ways.

Another unique feature is its advanced Building Management System (BMS) which serves as the brain of the complex. The BMS orchestrates Medical City’s many systems, including its centerpiece life safety features activated in emergencies such as fire or earthquake.

Tiendesitas: Pasig City’s novelty shopping village. Unique in its architectural design, Tiendesitas, a Maranaw-inspired shopping complex is a must-go place for Filipiniana lovers. Locals perennially enjoy Bohol’s trademark pristine environment, while tourists are assured of unique experiences that make for a fun and memorable stay. The province can be conveniently reached by air and boat. From Manila, Tagbilaran City is an hour and 15 minutes away by air, while travel by boat takes a much lengthier 25 hours. Adjudged the Kalakbay Tourism Destination of the Year from 2000 to 2002, Bohol remians a distinct place to visit and explore, especially for cheap short breaks.

Inabanga Fishing Village. Brunch at the Inabanga Fishing Village in Bohol equalled hearty helpings of friend quail, crabs, grilled squid, chopsuey, crispy shrimp, and more! You could also fish for the freshest tilapia.

Bilar Manmade Forest. The Philippine and Australian mahogany kingdom was the site of shoots for the teleserye Panday. A photo op is irresisitible in these parts.

Fruits of the Loom. Weaving is one of Bohol’s main crafts, enjoyed locally and exported in the form of placemats, coasters, sleeping mats, bags, hats, and other home and fashion accessories. There’s the Albur Tourist Center in Alburquerque and the OTOP (One Town One Product) for woven goodies and more.

Dolphin Watchers. Definitely worth waking up early for, as dolphins forage early in the morning and their hunting grounds are some distance from the coast. Dolphin watching trips are organized for P3,500 per boat. You will see groups of dolphins — seemingly hundreds of them — which popped on your left and right, with more showing up at the horizon.

Loay Riverwatch Cruise. Otherwise known as the Panaghoy sa Suba site mde famous by Boholano filmmaker Cesar Montano, Loboc River was the venue for a soothing meal aboard the Floating Restaurant that serves an array of native foods to be washed down by live acoustic music all the way to Isla Tarsius, where you will see tarsiers in their natural habitat. The Floaing Restaurant can be booked for P900, with P175 per plate meals on board. an option is the P250 eat-all-you-can meal rate that waives the floating resto booking fee. I suggest sitting in front to watch the river deliciously unfold before your eyes as you eat.

Chocolate Hills. To get to see the yummy view of the natural phenomenon that is the Chocolate Hills, you have the climb the 214 steps to the top of the observation hill. Still is Bohol’s most famous attraction, The Chocolate Hills consist of 1,268 hills that are very uniform in shape and mostly between 30 and 40 meters high. The hills are covered with grass which, at the end of the dry season, turns out chocolate brown, from which the Chocolate hills derived their name. A wishing well also awaits at the observation hill and adds whimsy to the experience.

The Clarin Ancestral House and Cafe Olegario. Located in Poblacion Ubos, Loay, this 1840-built ancestral house with a restaurant on the ground floor has been declared a heritage landmark by the National Historical Institute. Antique furniture transports you to a long-gone era; other features include an escape door on the bedroom floor and a front door with a tricky lock contraption that bespeak both the political nature as well as the upper social status of the house’s original residents. Cap your museum tour with a meal or snacks in the garden and savor the Bohol breeze.

Bohol Beach Club. Swimming in the white sand beach, kayaking, swinging in a hammock, sumptuous food, private tours with winsome tour guides.. all these can be had at Bohol Beach Club, the only first class resort in Panglao Island. Its recreational facilities include a dive shop, swimming pool, glass-bottom boat, tennis court, billiard hall, conference rooms, darts, chess, table tennis, backgammon and mahjong. It has standard rooms, superior rooms, executive suites, and a two-bedroom family suite with jacuzzi.

Church of the Immaculate Conception (Baclayon Church). Built in 1727, this is the oldest coral stone church in the Philippines and one of the best-preserved Jesuit churches in the region. Next to it is an old convent that houses a small museum with centuries-old religious relics, artifacts, and other antiquities dating back to the 16th century.

Bohol has numerous old churches and other historical monuments that showcase the island’s rich cultural heritage. Other churches to visit are the Church of San Pedro in Lobo home of the famous Loboc Children’s Choir); the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Dauis, Panglao; Maribojoc Church; and Panglao Church. Bohol, Philippines in indeed an ideal tourist destination for short breaks.

But if you’re looking for a Europe trip, such as Rome city breaks, it is recommended that you book for low-cost flights so you can save a huge percentage of your vacation budget.
